Aprons Hanging on My Clothesline

By Polly Bemis Albrecht

Everyone has had the opportunity to hear about the early settlers to Ohio and to our community. It is always better if the stories are told from the first person point of view. But it is even better if you can hear them from one of the direct descendants. That opportunity is here. Polly Bemis Albrecht will present one performance of her one-woman show “Aprons Hanging on My Clothesline,” based on the life stories of all the pioneering women of her family, people who settled here and helped Amherst grow.

If you remember Guild’s Grocery in downtown Amherst, or the Bemis Florist Shop on North Ridge Rd., or the 103rd O.V.I. then you already have some connections to the women in this show. Polly begins with her great grandmothers, Celia Scott and Ada Bemis; continues to her grandmothers Ruby Guild, and Lena Bemis; and then, of course, her Mother, Olive Guild Bemis. In each episode we meet one of these women and learn about their lives.

As a special treat we are introduced to the baked goods for which each lady was known. After the show the audience will sample a variety of baked goods, from cake to cookies.

Using simple costume elements like purses, glasses and wigs, Polly becomes each of her ancestors. And of course she wears a signature apron for each lady. These aprons become symbols of the women who shaped Polly’s life.

There’s lots of beautiful music from the 1940’s interspersed throughout and Workshop Players is assisting Polly with a full production with lights, antique props and sound effects.

If you love local history; if you remember fondly the aprons your mother and grandmothers wore while they cooked their favorite family recipes, join Polly Bemis Albrecht for a sentimental journey through her family’s scrapbook of life.
