Workshop Players September 24 2008
TRIVIA QUESTION
Several people who have seen Lying in State have said that it reminds them a bit of that play that Judy Holliday starred in... In this 1946 play by Garson Kanin, Judy Holliday originated the role of Billie Dawn. She also played the role in the original movie. Can you name that play?

AUDITIONS ******************
****CHRISTMAS BELLES****
AUDITIONS ******************
We had about 8 ladies and 2 men audition this week. They have all been invited to come back next week. We will have the real scripts by then and things should be easier. This is going to be a very funny show. Please come to audition!
We are seeking 4 men 20 to 50 and 7 women ages 20 and up.
Monday, September 29 and Tuesday, September 30 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Performances: November 20, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30, December 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 2008
Christmas Belles is by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, the authors of Dearly Beloved. This sequel to Dearly Beloved is a laugh-filled holiday show.
THE STORY: A church Christmas program spins hilariously out of control in this Southern farce about squabbling sisters, family secrets, a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep and a reluctant Elvis impersonator.
It's Christmas-time in the small town of Fayro, Texas, and the Futrelle SistersFrankie, Twink and Honey Rayeare not exactly in a festive mood. A cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb's Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. But things are not looking too promising: Miss Geneva, the ousted director of the previous twenty-seven productions, is ruthless in her attempts to take over the show. The celebrity guest Santa Clausplayed by Frankie's long-suffering husband, Dubis passing a kidney stone. One of the shepherds refuses to watch over his flock by night without pulling his little red wagon behind him. And the entire cast is dropping like flies due to food poisoning from the Band Boosters' Pancake Supper. And when Frankie lets slip a family secret that has been carefully guarded for decades, all hope for a successful Christmas program seems lost, even with an Elvis impersonator at the manger. But in true Futrelle fashion, the feuding sisters find a way to pull together in order to present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget. Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world!

ONE TIME SUGGESTIONS REGARDING THE 2008 ELECTION.
Relax! Im NOT going to tell you how to vote.
The upcoming election is too IMPORTANT to take lightly. Please take some time and do some research before making your choice. Vote intelligently and NOT emotionally.
I have been searching for sources that could help me sort through all the election rhetoric to get to the truths of what each candidate proposes and the impact of those proposals on the rest of us. Below are three sites that have been helpful to me. If you have other Nonpartisan web sites that can help us sort out the truth from the rhetoric, please send them to me.
1. Fact Check http://factcheck.org/
These folks take items in the daily news and alert us as to whether or not the truth is being told. Here is an excerpt from their mission statement:
Our Mission
We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce
the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. We monitor the factual accuracy of
what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches,
interviews, and news releases. Our goal is to apply the best practices of both
journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding.
2. Project Vote Smart http://votesmart.org
All kinds of pertinent info about all kinds of candidates, not just the top two. Here is an excerpt from their organizational description.
On common ground at a unique research center high in the Montana Rockies, a
struggling group of Americans, who you are unlikely to know and will probably never
meet, have begun a battle. A battle to protect all of us from the selfish interests that strip
us of the most crucial component in our struggle to self-govern -- access to abundant,
accurate, and relevant information.
Here at Project Vote Smart, Americans young and old volunteer their time, take no
money from special interest groups, and have committed themselves to an
extraordinary effort that, if successful, will provide their fellow citizens with the tools for
a reemergence of political power not known for half a century. Their idea is one you
may have thought of yourself. It is a deceptively simple concept but enormously difficult
to achieve and would not be possible without the collaboration of citizens willing to lay
their partisan differences aside for this one crucial task.
Picture this: thousands of citizens (conservative and liberal alike) working together,
spending endless hours researching the backgrounds and records of thousands of
political candidates and elected officials to discover their voting records, campaign
contributions, public statements, biographical data (including their work history) and
evaluations of them generated by over 100 competing special interest groups. Every
election these volunteers test each candidate's willingness to provide citizens with
their positions on the issues they will most likely face if elected through the Political
Courage Test.
3. The Tax Policy Center www.taxpolicycenter.org
This site takes some real effort and concentration, but there is an abundance of good info on this site. Here is an excerpt from their organizational description:
The Tax Policy Center is a joint venture of the Urban Institute and Brookings
Institution. The Center is made up of nationally recognized experts in tax, budget, and
social policy who have served at the highest levels of government.
What We Do
TPC provides timely, accessible analysis and facts about tax policy to policymakers,
journalists, citizens, and researchers.
I will not be running these again. If you lose them you will have to contact me individually.

ANOTHER ALUMNI NOTE
After all the notes last week from Alumni, several wondered how Brian McNally (Jerry Finnegans Sister) was doing. I wanted to check in with Brian also to see how he was doing after his year with The Orlando Shakespeare Festival. Heres Brians response:
Dave
Thanks for asking. Things are just fine.
Currently I'm plowing through my final semester at CSU in hopes of getting
my bachelor's in dramatic arts w/a minor in religious studies come this
December. I've got 17 credit hours to ace, so it's taking up quite a chunk of
time, and I use that as an excuse for not having a job right now.
I live in Tremont with my beautiful girlfriend, AraBella., whom I met while
working in Orlando.
Theatrically I've been playing it low key since I got back home; I took a
couple of cracks at Bang and Clatter, got some offers but chose to focus on
school and settling in to my new apartment. I might be doing something at CPT
in December - I'll be sure to let you know exactly what and when.
That's about it for me. Give everybody my best.
Brian
May your final semester at CSU be a good one! Stay in touch!

TRIVIA
Born Yesterday is the play written and first directed by Garson Kanin and adapted into a successful 1950 film. It was remade in 1993 with the same name. Actress and comedian Judy Holliday originated the role of Billie Dawn on Broadway, as well as in the George Cukor adaptation made by Columbia Pictures. The remake, directed by Luis Mandoki and released through Buena Vista Pictures, starred Melanie Griffith as the central character and updated the plot. A 1989 revival of the play starred Madeline Kahn.
